The Great Bowel Movement

Patient Leader

The Great Bowel Movement is a social awareness movement with the goals of empowering patients associated with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) including Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, as well as J-Pouch and Ostomy, to embrace their disease, be proud of their experience, and spread awareness throughout their communities. IBD is not big corporations, foundations, or pharmaceutical companies; it is me and you and all of us that live day-to-day with IBD and related conditions. By becoming our own personal spokespeople for our diseases, we can increase IBD awareness throughout the communities in which we live and work, and therefore, the world. We do this by providing tools to spread awareness, encouragement to become more open and accepting of your own disease, and a community to support each other. The Great Bowel Movement produces trendy “Ask Me” t-shirts designed to be worn out and about, and initiates conversations about IBD. It opens doors to conversations with colleagues or strangers, empowers those who wear them, and creates role models of those who have overcome, or are overcoming the challenges of living with chronic illness, who live their lives happily and successfully.

The Great Bowel Movement comes up with the most creative ways I have seen from any community to get their community involved.  — Sara

I just learned about the this wonderful organization putting the humor in ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel disease. Having recovered from lyme myself, a little humor goes a long way in helping you get back to who you really are. Props and kudos for their "Pooper Troopers" and "The Great Bowel Movement."  — BITS
