My advocacy originated as a care provider and registered nurse specializing in geriatric care. My passion for improving the treatment and care of older adults began in 1977. I have worked in every area of geriatric care including owning a homecare agency for 10 years, in which I personally met with and assessed over 95% of our clients. I also have worked for the State of Michigan as a Nurse Manager in an acute psychiatric prison hospital and as an Infection Control Coordinator. I became a very sick patient in 2003 and advocated and battled 5 years to be diagnosed with two chronic illnesses, Sjogren's Syndrome and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. This causes me to advocate as both a Registered Nurse and Geriatric Care Manager and Expert, as well as a patient, who also began and continues to battle breast cancer in October 2013. My perspective is unique as a nurse and patient and I fully understand the need for advocacy in healthcare, educating consumers, and in speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves, such as individuals affected by Alzheimer's, other dementia's, or due to their weakened physical and/or mental health condition.
