Patient Leader Hero

She started #spooniechat earlier this year and has done an amazing job moderating and running this project. It brings together chronically ill from all walks of life with all sorts of different illnesses in a way I've never seen.  — Kirsten

She runs spoonie chat, with a weekly chat on twitter and a private facebook group for chronic illness folks to vent, rant, ask questions, and deal with illness issues more privately. She's built this all up in under two years of advocacy because she's a super hero!  — Kirsten

Dawn has been instrumental for creating a supporting community with Spoonie Chat! I can't tell you the times I've felt so alone but once I log onto Twitter, there are many smiling #Spoonies to reach out to. Each week, she host #SpoonieChat on Twitter. She also has a closed Facebook Spoonie Chat group. Kudos to Dawn Gibson!  — Rona

Dawn is an amazing human being! She has worked tirelessly on bringing issues affecting all illnesses to light with SpoonieChat while enlightening people on other social justice work at the same time. She is an amazing storyteller and the best internet auntie!  — Kirsten

Every Wednesday night, Dawn hosts #SpoonieChat on Twitter. We're a community--she posts questions on her tumblr account and we discuss coping mechanisms--how to talk to doctors, manage time, etc. Dawn also has a public Spoonie Chat page and private group on Facebook. She does all of this despite her fatigue and chronic pain.

Creator and leader of the #SpoonieChat links people with all types of Chronic Illnesses every week. The group she has attracted is amazing with everyone contributing with questions, experiences, knowledge etc. It's a great forum for those new to their illness and those who need to know they are not alone.  — Michelle

Dawn is a leader in the chronic illness community and not just for the illnesses she has--every Wednesday night on Twitter, she brings together people with various disabilities through #SpoonieChat, a chat she created. Each week we have a different topic and questions. She also has a public Spoonie Chat page on Facebook and a closed Facebook group  — Jessica

Dawn is a brave soul & fearless leader who has accomplished MUCH in the past 5 years alone. She was one of the 1st patient advocates I ever followed on Twitter & remember participating in her founded "Spoonie Chat" as often as I could. I was 16ish at the time & adjusting to life with juvenile arthritis was lonely. To this day, we remain friends. <3  — Kenzie

Dawn's creation #SpoonieChat has done more for patient advocacy than anything I have ever seen. Weekly she brings patients and advocates together to chat about their conditions in a fun, educational, and open way. I learned how to be an advocate from this chat, and Dawn has only encouraged me.  — Jed
