I’ve lived with type 1 diabetes since 1997 and created the Diabetes Strong website and online community because I couldn’t find the knowledge I needed to exercise safely and effectively with insulin-dependent diabetes online. What started out as a small passion project quickly grew, and I soon realized that I wasn’t the only one who was desperately looking for detailed but easily accessible information on health and exercise for people living with diabetes. Today, more than 600,000 people visit the website every month, more than 16,000 people with diabetes support each other in the closed Facebook group, and more than 17,500 people follow along, as I show what diabetes can look like on Instagram. A large amount of the feedback I get on the Diabetes Strong website, Facebook, and Instagram is that people appreciate my approach because the goal is never to tell people what to do, but rather to inform and make sure people with diabetes has the right information to make informed choices. There is not such a thing as a one-fits-all solution when it comes to diabetes, but with access to good and reliable information, we can make the choices that are right for us and our diabetes. Knowledge is how we thrive with diabetes!
