Tireless in her “outreach”—the namesake organization she spearheads—to impoverished youth of Saratoga County, NY, Crystal Swinton transforms the meaning of community involvement into selfless conviction. Her heartwarming smile grants immediate permission to any seeking basics: shelter, food, or clothing. Based out of Shelters of Saratoga, sponsored through CAPTAIN Youth and Family Services, Crystal empowers self-sufficiency in the homeless; health behaviors, education, and personal growth her curriculum. The day starts early. She counsels, performs administrative duties, and defuses tensions with delight and humor. Evening takes her onto the streets soliciting donations (she'll be seeking boots for a 90-year-old or maybe got wind of sleeping bags no longer used by a camping club). Nights? She tirelessly finds her clients. And starts it all over the next morning. Crystal is my 2013 Health Hero.
