Helping my sister Teresa, who has Down syndrome, has changed my life forever. In Nov. 2013, Teresa was put into a nursing home, against her will, and against my father’s wishes. I was horrified. I decided to use every tool in my activist toolbox to get her out of there, draw attention to her plight, and demand answers. Together with my partner, Billiam James, & Teresa herself, we created a petition at Change.org. Our campaign “Human Rights Should Never Be Disabled” includes videos, posters and a website. It’s all aimed at getting answers on how Teresa's rights were taken away. CBC revealed there are thousands of people like Teresa in old age homes. How many, like Teresa, don't belong there?
