Ellen's 2013 Health Activist activities include: ++Nominated in 2013 by the physician's organization, the American Headache Society, Ellen was able to make a tangible difference for patients when she participated in the Department of Defense’s 2013 Peer Reviewed Medical Program as the consumer reviewer of many research applications under the Department of the Army. ++Ellen helped to form, and is the Chairman Elect for the American Headache Society’s (AHS) new patient organization – The American Headache and Migraine Association (AHMA), and moderated the organization’s first patient conference in Scottsdale, Arizona in November, 2013. ++Side by side with Migraine and headache specialists, she regularly attends AHS and international Migraine and headache conferences. ++Ellen participates in the AHS committees for ACHE (American Headache Society’s Committee for Headache Education and the Fred Sheftell, MD Education Center) and Women’s Issues. ++ She helped plan and promote the community-wide 2013 Migraine and Headache Awareness Month activities in June. ++Ellen is one of three advocates writing for the ACHE blog, and manages and writes for many other blogs and sites. ++She designed and produced a year long educational community video project organizing over 100 Migraine patients. It’s called “The Faces of Migraine” and was released during Migraine and Headache Awareness Month, June 2013, and re-released to support the 36 Million Migraine Campaign in July 2013. It has received acclaim from Migraine and headache specialists as well as patients and advocates. ++She also regularly stands for patients by speaking face to face with physicians and legislators in Washington DC during the Alliance for Headache Disorders Advocacy (AHDA) annual event – Headache on the Hill. ++Ellen talked to state legislators on behalf of lupus patients through the Lupus Foundation of America's 2013 Lupus Public Rally and Advocacy Day in March, 2013. ++Ellen is an ambassador for the United States Pain Foundation, promoting calls to action in the chronic pain community. ++Ellen participated in the Mayo Clinic's Social Media Residency program as a bronze Fellow, and the Mayo's Social Media Summit in September, 2013 and is constantly honing her craft to better support the patients and communities with whom she works. ++Ellen is constantly available online for patients who need help and support, but also connects on the phone and in real life when possible during her advocacy travels. In real life, Ellen also volunteers hands-on as a CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) trainer, Emergency Medical First Responder and helped found local Search and Rescue teams as both a horse mounted searcher and ground pounder. Her horses, art, animal rescue activities and advocacy efforts have been her passions.
